Omega made the switch from the Omega 321 ( Lemania 2310) to the 861

Hi

Omega made the switch from the Omega 321 ( Lemania 2310) to the 861 end of Oct 1968. Then it took some time for them to hit the shelfs of retail stores..

Bill, another Question for You
Jul 02 2008,10:02 AM

As the resident Omega expert (recall that we met about a year ago at a get together in NYC), I have a question for you about the roll-out of the 8500 movement.

As a recent purchaser of a Planet Ocean with the coaxial-ETA 2892-2 movement, it was with a little sigh that I (subsequently) realized that Omega may make the 8500 its ubiquitous "go-to" movement of the future.  So, my question is this:  when do you think the 8500 finds its way into the Seamaster/PO line and how big of a qualitative and horological uptick does it have the potential to be versus the coaxial-2892-2 movement in my PO?

Thanks
DB

Actually that is what i am waiting on before I buy a PO

Hi DB

The hour vision was not my cup of tea. Now with the news of the new AT Omegas with the 8500 , the PO can not be fair behind.  Also the new Proplof that was mentioned and concept photos posted will also have the 8500 as its engine.

I recently had a chance to try on a AT 8500 at a mini press fair in NYC..

It is very nice and one of Dr. No's favs.....

What will happen when a PO comes out with a 8500....  the general public not too much but for us WIS.... everyone will want the 8500 PO  in my opinion...  The PO case and dial are great and now if you can get it with a 8500 what is wrong that with ?

the above is just one mans ramblings...

....in this case, the "Greenwich CT" one, told me they do not feel the 8500 is necessarily to be seen as that 'big of a step up' from the 2892-2 coaxial because they like the current movenemt (albeit not 'manufacture').  Their experience, they tell me, is that the 2892-2 coaxial has demonstrated a long practical power reserve (they told me up to 58 hours) and is unusually accurate (my experience as well....my PO is even more accurate than my two G.O. movements).  They characterize the construction of the PO case/crystal as a "tank".  I agree.  The biggest advantage they see to any Omega piece (whether 2892-2 coaxial or 8500 coaxial) is that parts availability will, in the future, always be an easy propostion.  They consider Omega to the one of the most compellingly-priced lines overall (along with Parmigiani and G.O.).

Regards
DB
