I too will miss Chuck.
May 12 2008,19:51 PM

Whenever I would ask him a question, which he always answered, I would begin my Email:

"Well chuck, it's your favorite pain in the ass again." He would respond: "Why should you be any different?"

If anyoneone is going to "Omega Heaven" it needs to be Chuck, in fact, make it "Speedo Heaven".

Bless his soul, Miki

I am thoroughly shocked!
May 12 2008,20:08 PM

Chuck was so full of life, so funny, always ready to help out, creative, intelligent and knowledgeable, that I thought of him as a quite young man!

I never expected to read this...

I really enjoyed reading him. I will miss his virtual company very much.

Shocking sad news
May 12 2008,20:25 PM

A sad day to watch-lovers.... A very shocking news.

I've just did some email correspondences with Chuck last week for his advice on a particular watch that I'd like to buy. Before that I always been a fan of his writing, like a believe all WIS do.

Chuck is a very nice person and replied indifferently, very polite manner like a gentleman. He has been very sincere and thorough with his help, leaving a great impression of what a kind person this knowledgable man is.

Chuck, may you Rest In Peace. Sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to his loved ones.

I'm saddened by this news, Bill . . .
May 13 2008,00:20 AM

. . . Chuck was instrumental in the restoration of my Speedmaster Mk II, and shared his advice and sources freely even though he didn't know me. I never met him even though we were both at Omegamania last year . . . I'm sorry I never got the chance to shake his hand and thank him personally for all his help . . . Art

. . . here's a photo of the Mk II that Chuck was consulted on . . .

. . . and for which his parts source was invaluable . . . the handset, crystal, crown, and pushers were acquired with Chuck's able assistance. The watch now resides in Kurt's collection of vintage Omegas . . . cordially, Art

Sad News...
May 13 2008,02:03 AM

I am shocked and saddened by this news. Although I didin't know the man personally, his knowledge of the brand has always helped me make informed choices with regards to Omega watches. One of his articles inparticular was instrumental in my purchase of a Speedmaster mk.2. He will be missed by all watch enthusiasts.

I still haven't begun to process this news . . .
May 13 2008,03:23 AM

At WUS, one of Chuck's life-long non-WIS friends posted this under the name tganek (his first post).  This captured the essence of Chuck's character more than anything I could write.

"Fergie, rest assured there is no need to bury the hatchet with Charlie. He did not hold a grudge. If you shared even a 100th of his passion for watches I am sure he regarded you in high esteem.

And let me apologize. You all don't know me. I know nothing of watches. But I had the honor of sharing Charlie's friendship for 30 years. Sorry, we have always known him as Charlie or Char.

We were all stunned today. After the initial shock, phone calls, scrambling around, several of us googled Char's name. That's how I found this site. It may come as a surprise but outside the internet his close friends barely knew of his watch obsession. Char was very modest. Understatement. I think I may be one of the only friends who knew he was even published. He had an irresistible charisma, sharp intellect and wit. And yet he was so unassuming. Walk softly...

I wanted to share this story with folks who would appreciate it. I am cheap. I was always attracted to Char's Porsche Design Orfinas. For years he sent me Ebay links. I kept cursing him for trying to drag me into another "hobby" I couldn't afford. But I really loved those Porsche designed watches... Last year my nephew (who thinks Char is a god) and I met Char at a local bookstore as we always do. Charlie handed me a small pouch. I opened it. There was a beautifully weathered Orfina inside. "try it out" Chuck said. So many times I have tried on his watches. The shear weight of the thing. The depth of it. It fit perfectly. Solid. Char had purchased additional links for the band. "Why don't you hang on to it for a while..." Charlie knew that although I loved those Orfinas I would never pull the trigger and buy one. Too cheap.

"... what? I couldn't." I replied meekly. I was stunned. The watch felt so right on my wrist. I have never owned a watch before. Never worn anything on my wrist or fingers. Yet I couldn't take it off. It just felt good.

I paid him back for the watch. I had to despite his many protests. There is no way I could accept such a gift. But that is Charles Maddox III. Walk softy.

Chuck, you bastard. You outsmarted me again. You tricked me into the watch of my dreams. It's the only watch I have ever owned. It's the only thing I
have ever worn on my wrist.

I can't believe you will not be here today to put up with my stupid emails."

That was the essence of Chuck . . . .

A sad time for us
May 13 2008,03:30 AM

Sorry for your loss Bill. Chuck was a great resource and help to many of us in the world of watches. His painstaking work should really be maintained as a tribute to him and his work in this field. It would be a fine way by which we remember him too I think.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends

Rest in peace Chuck and THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge unselfishly.
May 13 2008,04:49 AM

I think everybody in the watch community learned a little bit from Chuck like I did.

It is very sad to receive this announcement.

My condolences to his family.

Chuck was a most helpful guy and a gentlemen in our email interchanges. His knowledge on the pieces that moved him, his articles, expertise on all things to do with the Omega Speedmaster will always be simply incredible. I am saddened by his passing and my condolences go out to his family and loved ones.

God Bless you Chuck and this one on my wrist as I type this...

A very sad day and a great loss...
May 13 2008,14:21 PM

...to the horology community as a whole and even more so for his family, of course. His knowledge, iconoclasm and passion will be missed, as will his willingness to answer the many questions sent to him through cyberspace. He was always tremendously helpful and the few times we corresponded were a real pleasure and of great assistance. You simply knew you were talking things over with a true enthusiast and gentleman.
Like many other Vintage Omega and Chronograph collectors, I owe him big time and I only hope his articles and database, the product of many years of collaborative efforts on Chuck's part and others, will somehow be maintained for the benefit of us all and future generations of collectors. They, along with his wonderfully detailed posts, are a great legacy to be treasured.
RIP, Chuck, and thanks for everything,
Tom

What shocking, sad news!
May 13 2008,17:14 PM

I probably did what many of you did -- clicked my bookmark, after a long day, to see what was up on the Omega Forum. What truly sad, sad news. Chuck was a gentlemen and a scholar; I truly enjoyed his posts on several Omega fora for the past 10 or so years, and it was always a treat to correspond with Chuck "back-channel."

Chuck, your passing is a loss both personally and, more importantly, to the community. You're irreplaceable and will be be sorely missed. Goodbye, my friend.

I think it would be nearly impossible to ...
May 14 2008,05:48 AM

overstate the impact of the loss of Chuck to the watch community. I feel an immense emptiness with him being gone. hHe was my go-to guy for so many things on the forums and off, watch-related and not. I suspect that's true for many people and their relationship with Chuck.

God bless you, Chuck, and rest in peace. You are one of the good guys and won't be forgotten.  ;-(

Chris
