MPEG sound file of a ref. 5029
Nov 29 2002,01:13 AM

click the picture to download an mpeg file. Please be patient - it is a large file, c. 500kb.
I suggest downloading it completely, then turning up the volume on your speakers and replaying the file.

Please note that the watch in the visual part of the mpeg is a rare 3939H with red lettering, not the 5029.

This 5029 is one of the two best minute repeaters I have ever heard, bar none.

Both the 5029 and 3939H are part of a private collection, property of a gentleman.

click on the picture to download the sound file of the 3939H - about 500kb
be sure to turn up the volume on your computer speakers.
You will need a media player compatible with mpg files. -
Sorry about the crystal glare; it took 30 minutes just to get THESE pictures...

Both pieces property of a gentleman.

Sky Moon Tourbillon
Oct 09 2005,08:08 AM

Sky Moon Tourbillon

Patek Philippe?s Sky Moon Tourbillon, ref. 5002, is a double-face timekeeper: the dial side features the mean solar time and perpetual calendar. The back of the watch has a nocturnal sky map, the phases of the moon and sidereal time. Not only is Patek Philippe?s Sky Moon Tourbillon the most complicated wristwatch of the current collection, it is also the first double-face wristwatch in the history of the Geneva-based manufacture. It incoporates twelve complications: perpetual calendar with retrograde date, week day, month, leap year cycle, age of the moon, minute repeater, tourbillon, map of the sky, sidereal time, angular movement of the moon and phases of the moon. The mechanical modulus of the astronomic indications displayed on the back of the watch with the nocturnal sky map is protected by Swiss patent CH 688 171 B5. The Sky Moon Tourbillon is delivered with a COSC chronometer certificate and its movement, like all movements created by Patek Philippe, has the privilege of bearing the Geneva hallmark. The manual winding movement comprises 686 different components, all hand-finished and assembled. Because of the time required and necessary to successfully carry out the numerous and delicate stages of the manufacturing process, only two examples of the Sky Moon Tourbillon will be produced every year.

Patek Philippe Gondolo 5109, cal. 215, introduced at Basel 2003
Apr 13 2003,03:03 AM

Patek Philippe has once again demonstrated their commitment to timeless elegance with the 2003 announcement of the all new Gondolo 5109 rectangular men's wristwatch.

Taking design cues from Patek Philippe's great rectangular watches of the middle of last century and particularly inspired by the 1930's ref. E739 housed in the Patek Philippe museum, the new Gondolo 5109 measures 30 millimeters wide and 43 millimeters from lug to lug with a water resistance rating of 25 meters.

Each model has a dial that matches the material of the case and applied Breguet numerals and hands in black-oxidized gold, giving them a distinctive appearance and excellent readability.

It utilizes the calibre 215 manual wind movement with 18 jewels, a 44 hour power reserve, a Gyromax balance and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Like all mechanical movements from Patek Philippe, the cal. 215 inside the 5109 carries the Geneva Seal.

It is available in white gold, yellow gold or rose gold with matching tang buckles on a handstitched alligator strap.

Patek Philippe Twenty-4 mechanical
Apr 13 2003,03:03 AM

Another one of Patek Philippe 2003 releases shown at Basel was the ref. 4909/50 Haute Joaillerie Twenty-4 mechanical.

Available in either white or red gold and fulled paved with Top Wesselton diamonds, it shows the cal. 16-250 Geneva Seal manual wind movement through the display back which is itself paved with 104 diamonds. The entire curved bracelet is also paved with diamonds for a total of 1468 stones equalling 8.33 carats.

The applied Roman numerals (at twelve and six) and hands are made of black-oxidized gold for maximum readability and elegance.

Ref. 2540 pink gold and rare pink gold dial with black enamel markers. Notice the hand detail of pink gold center and black enamel. The parabolic shape crystal to match the case. Pink gold was preferred by South American clients, and many of them were sold by
Serpico Y Laino including this one. This also uses the 12-600 Automatic Calibre-one of the finest Patek movement aside from the complications.

The production of ref.570 with cal.12"-120 started in 1938. In 1939 it was produced with cal.12" SC movement. In 1950 the ref.570 was produced with cal.27 SC movement and this is the example from 1952.

2526 YG with Brequet numerals
Oct 09 2005,08:08 AM

This watch will always be special to me. It wasn?t my first fine watch or even my first Patek, but it?s the one I always cherish because of the thrill of the hunt and intrigue that came with it.

I always admired the picture of the YG 2526 with Brequet numerals that?s in Patizzi?s Patek book. I wanted a 2526, but stubbornly decided that only the one in the picture will do. The version with the stick numerals was readily available, but no one knew of one with the Brequet numerals for sale. Then I found one with a goggle search one day at an obscure dealer about two years ago.

The dealer had an extract from the Patek archives, but the area for ?dial type? was blank. A call to David Jarret at the HSWA revealed that the Brequet numeral dial has been faked and Patek would not verify that the dial or the dial/watch combination is correct without an examination in Geneva.

So I gambled on the watch. After wearing it a few months, I sent it to Geneva for an overhaul and complete extract. Almost a year (!) later the watch was returned with the complete extract saying the dial type was enamel with applied Brequet numerals. Patek did a magnificent job with the overhaul. Some of the detail has been lost on the case from several polishing over the years, but it still looks very good. The dial, hands and numerals look great. The soft creamy color and texture of the dial really make the 2526s a standout. It?s been a year since the overhaul, and the watch runs consistently about 5 sec a day fast.

The watch has an inscription on the back dated 1953, which is the year of manufacture. I?ve got an email from the dealer saying he bought it from someone who wore it as his everyday watch for over 20 years. I wear it once or twice a week and still find myself admiring the dial throughout the day.

Perhaps the most beautiful wristwatch by Patek Philippe & Co. that I have ever seen. Considering the period, a ladies hunter pocket watch is likely the design basis. It may even be a conversion.

Patek Philippe 3514
Dec 15 2006,07:19 AM

This wg auto 3514 is a good example of a mid-1960's Patek Philippe auto, carrying the legendary 27-460M caliber movement with 37 jewels.
The 3514 has the screw back waterproof case, and the classic styling of Patek.
Some of these autos have a 'jumping date' function.
The yg auto version, whether with silver or gold dial, is raising some collectors interests and a number have sold in the latter part of 2006 for between CHF 10,500 and CHF 16,200. 3514s in yg with or without a metal bracelet, with jumping date, seldom come on the market and are likely to become more desirable.

A representative example of the 37 Jewel yellow gold Patek Philippe 3514 carrying the 27-460 movement has sold during the fourth quarter of 2006 in Melbourne Australia for AUD $16,500. This confirms the desirability of this iconic Calatrava model.

Chronometro Gondolo pocket watch
Oct 09 2005,08:08 AM

The Chronometro Gondolo

The Chronometro Gondolo watches were the result of an unlikeley collaboration between Patek philippe and the Brazilian jewellery store Gondolo & Labouriau, who at the beginning of the 1900's were the worlds largest retailer of Patek Philippe timepieces.

The concept for a unique timepiece to recognize this partnership arose in 1902, with the delivery of the first Chronometro Gondolo in this year. Gondolo & Labouriau devised an exact technical specification for the watches which were to bear their name, designed to showcase the technical ability of the watchmakers of Patek Philippe.

It was required that the watches feature 9K rose gold wheel trains {the only watches made by Patek Philippe to bear this feature}, the ability to wind the watch either by the crown or by a winding square fitted in the mainspring arbor, a minimum of 18 jewels, a "moustache" lever escapement and finally the fitment of the micro-metric snail cam index regulator, patented in 1891.

The watches were produced in 9 styles including centre seconds, chronograph and subsidiary seconds versions. The standard style was for a white enamel dial with roman numerals, signed "Chronometro Gondolo" {often around the subsidiary seconds dial} with an 18k gold case, although silver versions are known. The name "Chronometro" implies that the watches are chronometer rated, however, Patek Philippe has never confirmed whether the watches were certified by an official body such as the Geneva Observatory or whether they were timed in-house. The Chronometro name being added perhaps to suggest the accuracy of the watches? The results of observatory timing tests were held in high regard at this time, Patek Philippe were amongst the most successful in thse competitions and employed some of the most famous timers {regleurs} known as the "athletes of chronometry". The victorious manufacturers made good use of their high grades to promote the quality of their watches.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the Chronometro Gondolo story is the marketing employed by Gondolo & Labouriau. A payment plan was offered to spread the cost of the puchase price, which at the time was 790 francs. Customers were invited to become members of the "Plano do Club Patek Philippe". The club organized days out, picnics and other events, where the "Patek Waltz" would be played, and also a lottery! The "prize" being a watch, each member having agreed to the purchase price paid 10 francs per week, and was assigned a number. A weekly draw took place over 79 weeks, the winner of the draw each week would receive their watch, and continue to pay for the remaining weeks until the total of 79 was reached. One must take pity for the last member to be drawn, who would have had to pay for the full 79 weeks before receiving his watch!

The watches were eventually made in the form of wrist watches as well as pocket watches, up until 1927. The name "Gondolo" is still in use by Patek Philippe today, having been revived in 1993 for a series of "Art Deco" watches, reminiscent of those made for Gondolo & Labouriau.
