VH Classic questions
May 14 2008,22:04 PM

Dear all,

I am contemplating getting a Vianney Halter Classic. However, never having an opportunity to try on a live piece, I have a few questions that I hope some experts/owners can shed some light on:

1. Due to the fancy lugs, would this watch take a standard leather strap? or do all replacement straps have to be ordered from VH?

2. How large does the watch wear? I am 6 feet 2, weighing around 200 lbs, and am wondering whether the watch would appear too small on my wrist? I understand that the diameter is 36mm, how does the real "wearing" size compare to, say, a Rolex datejust?

3. Accuracy and reliability of the piece? Any known issues?

4. How does it compare to Voultilainen Observatoire or Dufour's Simplicity? Or do these comparisons make sense?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Jon

Some inputs

1. the fancy lugs only look fancy, they take usual leather straps, although the ones VH provides are finely made
2. it won't look too small on your wrist expect you feel comfortable only when wearing monster watches like some Grahams, AP ROO or Jacob & Co. Compared to a Datejust, it works pretty much the same way
3. the movement base VH uses in his Classic's (a movement originally crafted by Longines and then taken over by Lemania) is not only very flat but also very reliable when it comes to timekeeping. When the regulating is done correctly, which is the case for VH's Classic, the results achieved are superb
4. comparison with Kari and Philippe's work is possible although each watchmaker has his own signature. The best link between them is perhaps that they are small entities and all independent.
I hope this answers your questions and will help you in your choices.

Dear Z3, Mr Waguson is the BEST person to tell you about the VH Classic

His experience and work with the Classic and the early projects with Janvier et al (Vianney) is extensive.

He knows Vianney better than Vianney himself..I am not kidding

The comparison between the 3 makers are possible...but the parameters of comparison are just not "there"..as the Classic is a palate of displaying radical finish on a contemporary canvass, whereas the Dufour and Kari are both tightly bound classical pieces with no radical bias.

Hence, on the surface, a Classic may "look deceptively less" than the other 2..but on deeper inspection, the Classic explores other boundaries and does not challenge the movement architectural details.

I hope this helps.
