Daniel Roth PuristSPro dinner event in NYC on Wed June 19, 2008
Jun 20 2008,21:00 PM

PuristSPro's official Daniel Roth dinner event in NYC on Wed June 19, 2008 was held at Fiamma located in SoHo on Sullivan Street.  Fiamma is a discreet upscale Italian restaurant which is one of the few Italian restaurants in NYC to receive a 3-star rating from the New York Times.   We had the entire third floor private dining room booked for this elegant and special event - "Masterpieces in the Art of Watchmaking".

Picture from the menu

Our last Daniel Roth event was around 3 years ago, so it was a perfect time to host our 2nd Daniel Roth event with a big bang.  Definitely a wonderful and memorable night to remember, and i hope those who brought their cameras can take the time and share some of their pictures because I wasn't able to snap all the pictures I wanted.

Cheers,
Anthony

PART I: Pre-Event Setup
Jun 20 2008,21:01 PM

The night before was our Gerald Genta event at Wolfgang Puck's Spago in Beverly Hills , and I got home that night a tad before midnight.  I packed as quickly as I could when I got home because my flight from LA to NYC was in a few hours at 6AM.  My alarm clock sounded at 3AM, and off I dragged myself to the shower to wake up.  I didn't want to take a later flight and risk being late in case my flight was delayed, so I arrived in NY a couple hours early before the cocktail reception at 7pm.

I was the first to arrive at Fiamma at 6pm, and the waitstaff was practically finished setting up the tables.

Elegant ambiance

We even had our own little bar and sofas!

Clean wine glasses all ready to go for the cocktail reception in 30 minutes

Now this is what I call private dining in NYC!

PART II: Cocktail Reception with Hors D'oeuvres
Jun 20 2008,21:03 PM

The guests start arriving one by one, and the waitstaff brought out some delicious hors d'oeuvres (sorry don't have any pics of the hors d'oeuvres sad  forgot to take pics).  I don't know how many different tasty hors d'oeuvres were served but it was probably at least 6.  Those that I remember off the top of my head are lamb chops, tuna, scallops, and eggplant.  Tray after tray were being served, and I knew this night was going to be a fabulous night not only for my eyes and wrists, but also for my stomach smile

PART III: The Food
Jun 20 2008,21:03 PM

Here's a picture of the menu for the night

Fiamma's version of beef carpaccio

Ravioli of buffalo ricotta, lemon zest, cinnamon, parmigiano reggiano, vacche rosse - a little heavy but scrumptous

Soft chocolate, praline powder, cocoa gel, fiore di sale marino

I ordered the beef tenderloin for my entree but forgot to take a picture.  I think I was too busy drooling over the Daniel Roth Papillon Chronograph on my wrist!!!

PART IV: The Watches 1 of 2
Jun 20 2008,21:03 PM

Here's the Daniel Roth Papillon Chronograph in white gold.  This was the watch I've been dying to try on ever since I saw SJX's pictures.  It's big but fits perfectly on the wrist!  Wears smaller than an AP Offshore IMO and feels around the same size as a 44mm Panerai Luminor but definitely heavier since it's white gold.

Look at this finishing!  Beautiful ain't it?

Here's the Daniel Roth Tourbillon with 200 hours power reserve.

That sure is one beautiful tourbillon cage!

The Papillon is an appealing, and very tempting one, Anthnoy
Jun 20 2008,23:18 PM

now that I recently saw a DR in the flesh, I can see that the curved shape of the case, and of the sapphire glass, + the awesome finish of the whole watch make a DR a very appealing watch to get!

And if you add this funny, original, and nice presentation of the Papillon, well...I have to negociate with my Banker...LOL

Thanks a lot for these beautiful pics, Anthony...

Once again, my friend, you did anamazing job!

Best.

Nicolas

I'm definitely going to get WG Papillon Chrono someday
Jun 20 2008,23:22 PM

I was hogging up the WG version at my table :P  It really is a piece of art; and as I said before, I bet the Papillon Chrono is gonna elevate Daniel Roth to the next level in terms of publicity and recognition amongst collectors.

Cheers,
Anthony

Yup it is!
Jun 21 2008,09:36 AM

Seemed like the Athys II and Papillon Chrono were the 2 favorites of the night at our table.  Not sure what the 2nd table was drooling over, so hopefully someone from the other table can spill the beans.

Cheers,
Anthony

Great shots ...
Jun 21 2008,12:35 PM

of a great watch that is slowly but surely growing on me. Having seen JX's YG version and now your pics of the WG variant is already starting to cause me to take the first steps towards joining the DR family. Agree with your assessment that this might finally elevate the brand into more than what it is today. Thanks AT!! smile

Amazing Blue and something about size matters
Jun 26 2008,11:05 AM

Anthony,

I got Internet access at last (moved house) and the first report I see is the DR NYC GTG.

The WG Papillon Chronograph has an amazing blue dial that is striking with the WG. Was that the real colour or a digital photo artefact?

LOL - your size comparison photo of a rare RM011 and an even rarer DR Papillon Chrono probably does not help us regular punters who have no access to either to judge the size smile

Maybe we should have a standard comparator watch or ruler scale in our future PPro event photos?  Maybe we should use the PPro ABR watch....?

Regards,

MTF

The blue in the picture is the real color
Jun 26 2008,16:02 PM

What you see is what you get smile

The DR Papillon Chrono is fairly big but easily fits small wrists.  You'd probably need a minimum wrist size of 6.25" to pull it off.  6.5" and larger would be ideal.

You're totally right about the size comparison so once we get the PPro All-Black Rescue watch, I'll bring it to all our gatherings as the standard comparator watch smile

Cheers,
Anthony

DR Event
Jun 21 2008,09:11 AM

Anthony,

Thanks for putting this outstanding event together, I know it wasn't easy coming from LA to NY with very little rest in between events.  All of us there very much appreciated it.  Also many thanks to Mr. Roden and his group for coming over as well, it was nice learning about another brand. DR makes  fantastic timepieces and after getting up close and personal with them,  I'll certainly have to own one someday.

Thanks again,

Tony

Which Daniel Roth was your favorite there?
Jun 21 2008,09:34 AM

Mr Gerald Roden kept on joking with us at our table "No Discounts" so maybe we can convince him to give us a discount with a group purchase :P  LOL!

It was great seeing the NY crowd again, and thanks once again for your help!

Cheers,
Anthony

Favorite DR at the event.....
Jun 21 2008,11:54 AM

There was a gentleman at the event wearing a skeleton tourbillon that I'm not sure if it’s still in production or not but was my favorite. He didn't show it off at the table shot but should have, the watch is gorgeous! My favorite from the catalog is the Tourbillon Lumiere.

I think it may have been this one
Jun 22 2008,06:10 AM

Hi SJX,

I can't remember exactly which model it is, but it is a very special piece indeed.  The last time Gerald Roden was in town for a DR dinner, he was not shy about letting it known that they would love to purchase the piece for their collection.  Apparently it is one of VERY few of this particular model ever made.
