What documents do I need when buying pre-owned ?
Jul 13 2008,10:44 AM

I am planning to buy Patek 5396 pre-owned. Can you help me with the following question:

1. How do I know if it's real or fake watch?
2. Can I transfer the warranty under my name?
3. Can I still register my name to Patek(ownership registration) so that I can get Patek magazine?

4. Any other information that I have to know?

I really appreciate for your help. Thanks

The only ways to know if it is real or fake is to buy from an AD, a trusted dealer, or a reputable third party.  You could take the watch to an AD and have him look at it.

The warranty travels with the watch.  It's best to have the Certificate of Origin or the original sales slip if you can get it.  Patek doesn't care who owns the watch provided it was sold through legitimate channels.

If you own the watch you should be able to register for the magazine by submitting the movement number (see web site).

Confirm the movement number

Along with all the things mentioned above, do confirm the first six digits of the movement number from the warranty card. You'll find the digits on the caliber and you might require an aid to have a closer look at them, you'll not have much trouble doing so as 5396 comes with an exhibition case-back.
