Interesting news about 5159
May 13 2008,18:08 PM

I found from one seller that Pateks are completely selling out now. Apparently, in the past only people like me who were watch collectors were buying them. Now, they are seen as investment opportunity and everyone is jumping into them. This was made worse by the 5102 which became worth 325k when its original value is only 192k once it was discontinued in WG. He expected it to become worth at least 500k before stabilizing.

Apparently, Patek does not make too many of the grand complication watches any more. Due to this, they sell off before they hit the store, so it is a supply-demand issue. Some of them quote 92k for this now for the WG. It almost seems to be getting out of hand. Any thoughts on this please?

Although I would say that this watch is a great alternative to 5970..  The dial really 'pops' when you wear it in certain light -- I've gotten many compliments.. Surprising how many people notice actually.

In fact they quite probably make more complicated watches than ever but

Hi,

The world market is expanding for PP like for many watch brands!

And the speculators are buying what they can, hoping to make money. As ever some will do and some will loose!

A few PP models have indeed a rising value, but many others loose value as they get out of the store on your wrist, as it is quite normal with a watch to happen!

Once the speculators will realize that they will try to sell, will loose money for many of them, and the market will become less insane! That will be a great day!

Now please could we come back to watches and forget about value discussions which are not the aim of this site!

Cheers

dje

Patek makes a lot of complicated watches but

for each type they make a small number of watches. They are becoming more limited in their releases now compared to the past. This is due to some of their models in the past not being received well by the market. I was suggested that the 5159 might also be a limited release, so I have to grab one if I wanted it. Of course, that may not be true.

Really?

Hi,

I'm surprised by what you wrote: "They are becoming more limited in their releases now compared to the past."

I'm surprised because it doesn' t make sense to me, both economically as a successful company and strategically as they are expanding their markets.

What is possible is that they send less to "old" markets because they can't produce enough to cover "new" markets.

But they certainly don't produce less overall.

You must also notice that they have indeed decreased the range of models in the last 5 to 10 years.  So they produce less different models to reach a larger capacity on successful models.
