Want to see a SPECIAL Lange 1?
Jul 07 2008,08:01 AM

About 10 years back Lange made a handful of Lange 1 watches in stainless steel, they were delivered in either the blue dial/silver hands or silver dial/blue hands combination, like the white gold models at the time. They were priced at the same as the identical gold models.

An owner of one of these incredibly rare watches has kindly shared this picture with us; this collector is the first owner of this watch, having bought it new from an authorised dealer.

At the time the owner purchased it I thought it odd to pay as just as much as the gold Lange 1 for a steel version - what folly that was.

Many thanks to the owner.

Any chance to get more pics of it?

A real rare bird!

I heard of it but never saw one in the flesh.

Best.

It looks exactly the same as the gold Lange 1

except under proper light it is obvious it is steel because of the darker metal colour. And it is the lightest Lange watch I've ever held, except maybe for the service 1815.

I am fortunate enough to have handled this watch a few times, hopefully I will be able to get photos of it in the future.

one day I hope to call a SS Argenté dial and blued SS hands "mine" ...
Jul 07 2008,08:46 AM

one was sold (by AQ?) a year or two ago; it did fetch a "handsome" 30K+ euro´s ... I fear that, in the future, prices will be a lot higher!

Thanks for posting!

Ali Boron syndrome :)
Jul 07 2008,11:07 AM

Could it be that we all have the same undiagnosed syndrome - or virus as Edwin calls it !- of wanting the Lange that we do not have smile))
Lange has to stop doing this to us smile... I am so happy with my datograph and then I see this watch and it's like .. Whoooooaaaaaaaaahhhh !
I am heading off to Dresden/ Glashutte soon> Maybe I gotta have me a word with the guys there and see whether they have a cure of this syndrome... I think they shoudl recommend psychiatric help for all of us - group therapy ! maybe we get like a group rate card !!

I don't know the history of this steel Lange 1...
Jul 07 2008,21:44 PM

What was A. Lange & Sohn's reasoning for a stainless steel version and the original pricing at the level of the gold models?

Here is what I was told....
Jul 08 2008,19:49 PM

...by a well known NYC Lange AD.
At one point early on in the importation of Lange watches into the US, Lange decided to supply its dealer(s) with SS versions of the Lange 1 which were meant to be loaner watches when someone had to send their Lange in for service.

Don't know how true this is, but that is the story I got from a pretty reputable source.

Best,
Mitch

this story...

is not true. The Service Langes were all 1815 SS watches, with black dials. And with Service and Property of Lange Uhren engraved on the rear case and on the movement.

Rumours are interesting

Thanks for the information.

I imagine if those watches got into private hands they would be worth a premium as well.
