an mythical breguet : the winston Churchill watch "the turnip"

Apr 15, 2009,07:49 AM

Hello all fellow breguet lovers !
i hope you will apologies my very poor English (after all im  French and we don't have the reputation to be good in others language !) wink
during a discution on an french board about famous watch and historical owner , i have made research about the breguet n° 765, an admirable minute repeater chronograph with fly-back seconds hand acquired in 1890 by the Duke of Marlborough and became the legacy of sir winston
from the information i have until now, i discover the breguet factories made publicity about sir winston churchill but they can't have any idea how the watch look like because the only information they have is in the old register book .(maybee i m wrong but i don't have find trace !)
so i have started the hunt smile
i have made a call to mister richard M. langworth, who can be consider as one of the best expert about sir Winston and the editor of The Churchill Center !
after few mail ,Mr langworth make me enter in contact with one of the decendant of sir winston ( an i m really greatfull for that !!!)
and this is the answer:

enjoys wink

"

I have my Grandfather's Breguet pocket-watch, which is still in perfect working order. It is attached to a heavy gold waistcoat-chain which, at the end has a small round gold case for holding gold Sovreign-coins, a V for Victory emblem (similar, I believe, to one he gave the members of his Wartime Cabinet in 1945), a silver head of Napoleon (of whom he was a great admirer), a keepsake medallion of the (Westminster) Abbey Division By-Election of 1924 (which WSC lost by just 43 votes), a Garnet-stone set in a gold heart (the gift of Clementine on their Wedding-day in September 1908) & another golden heart, which Clementine gave Winston on his 90th Birthday (after 56 years of marriage & less than 8 weeks before his death)."

Very interesting search and find, my friend! This is a superb story, indeed. And don't worry, after having read your post, I fear that my Borat English is worst than yours! Best, and I'm looking forward to read you more often here! Nicolas

As for the movement, ask to someone to open it, or better, go to the Breguet Boutique with it... I'm sure Emmanuel will be more than happy to see it in the flesh! Best, Nicolas

Thanks for presenting us a valuable pice of history....

...also I find it very human that sir Winston had on the chain of his watch, mementos etc... Now if only we could have a look at the mechanism... Thanks again Tassos

seems my English are also Borat style...

...I meant "Piece of history"!!! Also I notice that the watch has not the classical Breguet hands and the company's signature...

good observation cheers nt
