The back of 7137
Jul 13 2008,18:06 PM

Found this in the web. I think I prefer the engraved movement of 3137.

Vince

Thanks dear friend!!!
Jul 13 2008,23:32 PM

And my Baroque self remains quite unimpressed!!!!1
Some watches e.g. Tourbillon Messidor have to be undecorated... The movement and the tourbillon IS their decoration... Some others like the 7137, with minimal complications (Date and reserve de marche) have to be decorated a la Breguet...
Pity, the dial showed a very promising watch (although, as Jack mentoned, the subdial of the moon is also undecorated and exists like an afterthought)..
It goes out of my list. If it has minimal complications at least it must be an object d'art...
I will wait for something else
Thanks for the photo... It clarified the situation, in my mind...

Have you heard whether the 3137 is going to be discontinued? I called my AD today and they are unsure.
Thanks and regards,

3137 and 7137
Jul 14 2008,03:10 AM

I have a 3130 in BA. The 35.5 mm case is acceptable to me, although a bigger case is preferable. I have wanted a 3137 in BB for several years, and have been waiting for a 3137 in a bigger case. I can do without an engraved movement, but I still prefer the alignment of the power reserve and moonphase in 3137. According to a Japanese watch site the 3137 is going to be discontinued. I hope that's not true (at least not so soon) as I want to put the two watches side by side for comparison.

Regards,
Vince

I prefer the movement as it is.
Jul 14 2008,01:25 AM

Thank you for the pictures.

I think this is a stunning piece in white gold and seeing it in white metal has just put it in my wish list.

The gilloché on the dial and rotor is exquisite, and I find a better balance on the dial with the power-reserve and moon-phase indicators placed horizontally.

For once, I disagree with Tassos.

Best regards.

Yes, I know it is a defect in my aesthetics...
Jul 14 2008,02:22 AM

...or rather a different perception of beauty... Sometimes, a simpler, cleaner look in a watch (5817) can enchant me, but most of times a watch back, like the one in my perpetual 5327, is able to make me look at the engraving like a work of Art....
That does not of course mean that the ones who like the simpler uncluttered look are at fault, and sometimes the movement itself IS a work of Art (look to JLC Duometre for example...)
Diversity is needed so anyone can find the one who speaks to his heart...
Best

Neoclassical vs Baroque
Jul 14 2008,04:01 AM

I would not dream of questioning your sense of aesthetics, my friend and colleague Tassos. Perhaps it is just that my perception of beauty is a little simpler, more neoclassical, than your Baroque taste. Plenty fine examples of both where I live.

I saw this piece on your first post in yellow gold and was moderately interested, but the white gold version definitely speaks volumes to me.

Kindest regards.

Yes, you are right...
Jul 14 2008,04:16 AM

...it is quite a personal thing... As is the color of gold... I have plenty of steel watches and I love their color... but in my ancient(!) mind gold is always yellow and the rather warm shade of it... like the one found in jewels of ancient (again) Egypt... But that is a matter of personal taste and I do not want to impose this taste to anyone...
On the other hand, as Jack says, think of a White Gold Olympic medal LOL!!!!
Be well,
with affectionate regards

If one does a Review on a watch that one has not seen..
Jul 14 2008,18:04 PM

If one does a Review on a watch that one has not seen... Normally it would not be taken very seriously.

But as watch lovers, that is what we  have to do to make an assesment of our next purchase, because so often a watch is leaked on to the market with so little back up information and we have to search long and hard to get the full information.

This can make one a little cynical and I guess it gets back to commonsense .."If a phot of the back of a watch is so hard to find...then the back of the watch was probably not worth taking a photo of"

My "Review" of this watch I have not seen, is that.... it is not for me.

The unengraved back, the small offset rotor, the pin head sized crown, the unfinished cloud detail above the moon...I think this is a little disapointing comming from Breguet.

So back to the.. 'Will my first moonphase watch be a Breitling -  Limited edition red gold Montbrilliant Olympus or the  IWC Perpetual Calender in Rose Gold?' ......can anyone offer any other suggestions?

Sorry Breguet.

Kindest regards to all,

Jack

I competely agree, dear Jack....
Jul 15 2008,02:58 AM

...although I am sure that this watch will find admirers,... It is not for me or you, but surely will find others who like the white gold version of it...
The IWC seems more elegant for me as a moon phase watch... IWC in the perpetual, as well as in the old Da Vinci, made the stars in the sky as small gold dots of different sizes, which are far better than the stylized stars seen in other watches, and it really is a watch that you will treasure...
Hope I helped a little...

Hi Nicolas...I just came across that article again...
Aug 02 2008,03:11 AM

Hi Nicolas,

Remember I asked if the JLC use the IWC movement.....I just came across that article again and pull an extract from it.

I attach a copy below form your info.

Let me know your thoughts.

Kindest Regards,

Jack

"There are a few other interesting observations about the IWC calendar mechanism and its use in various watches. In IWC's Novocento, the calendar block is rotated 90 degrees clockwise from its original position in the DaVinci. Dial displays are correspondingly rotated. In both of JLC perpetuals the calendar block is rotated 180 degrees, also rearranging the Da Vinci's original dial displays. Only in the very recent Ref. 2050 hand-wound has IWC returned to the original orientation of the DaVinci. The Novocento, as well as both of JLC's perpetual also omit the century indication. These variations have, in all likelihood, been done simply to vary the appearance of the watches."

What I understood, Jack
Aug 02 2008,04:02 AM

Is that IWC used JLC movements, and added their own pc module.

Hence the " air de famille "..

AFAIK, of course.

Post a moonphase question on HOME
Jul 15 2008,16:14 PM

Hi Jack,

It might be helpful to post a general question on moonphase watches on HoMe. I don’t recall this topic being discussed for a while and you might flush out some nice pictures, which is always a bonus. You could describe what your favourite aspects of the moonphase are.

Although I don’t own any of these, my favourites are:

A. Lange & Sohn, Lange 1 moonphase (thanks Edwin for the lovely image)

De Bethune DB15

JLC Reverso Night & Day

There are many other beautiful moonphase displays, but they don’t always integrate perfectly with the watch to my eyes.

Enjoy the hunt.

Andrew

Thanks for the image
Jul 15 2008,20:50 PM

Hi Vince,

Yes, these are very lovely watches, the 3137 being a particular favourite of mine, probably because of the link with Breguet's original No.5. Even though they are both around 35mm in diameter, because of the large crystal going to the edge of the case, both the 3330 and 3130/7 wear quite large on an average sized wrist. The whimsical moonphase adds a nice contrast to the classical case.

3130/3137 to be discontinued...
Jul 16 2008,00:07 AM

Hi Nicolas,

Just received a call from my AD confirming Ref 313X is to discontinued. Hurry up if you want one! smile

My AD is going to have one 3137 in WG arriving today. I am going to take a look, but at the moment I am more inclined to its replacement 7137. The dial of 7137 does grow on me!

Regards,

Vince

I really like the dial of 7137 in white gold
Jul 16 2008,18:26 PM

I agree with you that the dial of 7137 is really very nice in white gold. Although not seen yet in the metal yet I find it a potentially fitting companion to a budding (modest) collection of calendars. I like the technical aspect of horology, so I am not disappointed by the minimally decorated movement and the off-set rotor, as I believe there probably is a mechanical advantage for Breguet to place it precisely in that position. Therefore I would say this probably is a watch I would enjoy. Finally, I am one of those others who prefer white over yellow metal and a relatively sober look. Like this:

Thanks a lot.
Jul 15 2008,07:53 AM

This back is a bit too "sober" for a Breguet, I like the decoration "à la Breguet" for these timepieces even if sometimes we can find them a bit too baroque.
