getting the hang of the new camera
May 09 2008,09:00 AM

I'm finally past the initial hump of "How do I use this" and onto, "how do I make the pictures look like I want" First lessons, make sure you've cleaned the crystal and that the watch is parallel to the camera...REALLY parallel. This was tipped a tiny fraction

Great shot.

I usually prefer shots with a shallow depth of field so that not everything is in focus, that gives the image more character and leaves it looking less static like a stock photo.

Hi Aaronm,
Very nice macro shot, looks like the LaTradition.  Can you tell us which new camera and lens you're using?

Regards,
ED-209

If you want more of that picture to be in focus, use a smaller aperture.

I'm guessing that just by using an aperture of 6.3, you won't need to be perfectly parallel and you will be able to get the entire balance wheel in focus.  You will need to use a slower shutter speed and that might cause motion blur, so use a tripod and stop the movement as well.

Moderator tag-team! :-P

I've actually got a pile of things in the "gotta take good pictures" pile, so I'll try to get some good stuff soon

Next time I come to Paris, lend me your collection, I'll take good pix!
